March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, so today we are focusing on nutrition for your gut! It’s widely known that what you eat significantly impacts your health and wellbeing. Below, we are dishing out some healthy ways to ward off colon cancer.

Boost the antioxidants– These potent substances are found in many fruits and vegetables, and help to protect healthy cells from becoming cancerous. Shoot for 5 servings per day of fruits and vegetables, and make your plate as colorful as possible to reap the most benefit.
Swap out the steak– Research suggests high consumption of red meats increases the risk for colon cancer. If you HAVE to have it; limit it to two, 4oz. portions per week.

Focus on Fiber– Fiber helps substance move more quickly through the GI tract, which may prevent toxic substances from accumulating in your gut. Increase your fiber intake by consuming a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes. Aim for foods with at least 4 grams of fiber per serving.

Skip happy hour– Increased alcohol intake has been linked to colon cancer. If you do drink reduce your intake to no more than 2 drinks per day for males and 1 drink per day for females. One drink is equal to a 5 oz. glass of wine, 12 oz. beer or 1.5 oz. liquor drink.

Are you at risk for colon cancer? Take a five-minute online questionnaire – the ColonCancerAware Risk Assessment – to help determine your risk profile. Knowing your risk profile will enable you to take control of your health and provide you with the best defense against colon cancer.
